Canonical Definition
Potency is a Spiral Civilization concept describing the capacity of an element, relationship, configuration, or system to generate new possibilities, qualities, relationships, structures, or further developmental states.
Expanded Entry
What is this capable of making possible next?
Potency is not the same as Potential. Potential describes what may exist, happen, develop, or become accessible under particular conditions. Potency describes the capacity to generate further possibility.
Something may possess limited resources while having high Potency if its existence or activity creates conditions from which many new possibilities can emerge. Conversely, considerable resources may have low Potency if they remain isolated, inaccessible, rigidly organized, or unable to generate further development.
Potency can belong to an individual element, but it can also emerge through relationships.
elements → relationships → expanded possibilities
elements + relationships + Higher Order → emergent structure → new Potency
Higher Order is not more organization. It is organization that generates more possibility.
A higher-order structure may possess Potency unavailable to any of its components independently. Potency can therefore propagate:
Potency → new possibilities → new relationships → new structures → new Potency
This makes Potency closely connected with Degree of Freedom and Multisymbiotic Systems. Potency is recognized not only through what something is, possesses, or accomplishes now, but through what it can enable to exist next.
